Parnassus on Wheels is about a country woman who leaves her life on the farm to drive a wagon that is also a bookstore, it’s like a pre-bookmobile. The story tapped into that yearning I get sometimes to just up and quit everything and just go around talking to people about great books. Is that normal? I really wanna do it, but it would require putting on pants, so don’t worry, I’ll stay put for now and talk to people about books on the internet. The book has wonderful quotes about literature and reading, stuff that would make any chorus of book lovers shout “Amen!” What kinds of meta book-in-book stuff makes your skirt fly up, sugar? LH: I accidentally did things backwards and read the follow-up to Parnassus first: It’s called The Haunted Bookshop, and is a delightful tale of a second-hand bookstore and the wonders that can be found. Now I’ll have to read Parnassus on Wheels! (This will not be a problem the Melville House Art of the Novella series books are so delicious-looking, I want to eat them all.) I know I’m going to get a cease-and-desist letter from her lawyers soon because I talk about her constantly, but Elizabeth McCracken’s novel, The Giants House, is pretty much the most perfect book there is. It’s about a librarian who befriends a young boy who grows to be eight feet tall. There’s a lot more to it, but I’m going to refrain from revealing any more and instead switch to Mr. Penumbras 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, about a guy who takes a job working in an unusual bookstore. This hits all the nerd spots! Books! Secret codes! Glow-in-the-dark covers! No really the cover glows in the dark. Any nonfiction about books you love? RJS: I completely adore Anne Fadiman’s Ex Libris, a lovely little collection of essays and vignettes about the reading life. Even though Fadiman and I don’t always agreeI think it’s fine to leave your book laying open face-down on a table if that’s what makes you happyI totally dig the way she expresses what it is to be a person whose life is shaped by books. And for something fun and irreverent, Beowulf on the Beach by Jack Murnighan. It’s like Cliff Notes for the classics, except actually useful because it tells you where all the dirty parts are and what you need to know about each book in order to sound smart about it at cocktail parties. What about you, my sweet? Do you dig nonfiction about books? LH: Oh yes! I think A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books by Nicholas Basbanes is one of the best. I’m even going go ahead and declare it a classic. It’s about book makers, book hoarders, book thieves it’s full of fascinating stuff revolving around books throughout history. This book is an absolute necessity for bibliomaniacs. Today lawmakers are pushing for an ordinance that would ban the wearing of saggy pants in public places. During the first decade of the 21st century, many local governments, school systems, transit agencies, and even airlines pass law regulations against practicing of wearing saggy pants. Most federal states have banned the practice of some people that might want to show their underwear. In fact, some movies have influence on young men to wear their pants like that because some movies are only advised to mature adults. Secondly, I believe that some people that does this is related to some gang or group. Most rappers wear their saggy pants are showing young men that it is ok the be cool and to stand out. Even though some have belt, but refuse to wear them on and still wear they saggy pants. Belts are to be put on your pants to keep them from being loose or falling on your body. A lot of young men are taught to wear them at school because of the school rules about saggy pants. Most school codes require that you must wear a belt to class or be sent back home. In short, I believe that all kids with sagging clothing is violating school dress codes and in the court system. Thirdly, there is a fear of people associating the way young men dress as crimes being committed for having saggy pants. Today a lot of saggers are being arrested for disorderly conduct in a public environment. Now there is a law saying that if police sees anyone sagging their pants will have to go to jail. Furthermore, it has since become a symbol of freedom and cultural awareness among some young men and a symbol of their rejection to the values of mainstream society. Most court systems sent out a law regarding the issue. For some people to have saggy pants without wearing a belt will be put into jail. In conclusion, I am against saggy pants because it is disrespectful to older adults and society. I believe that the laws about saggy pants should all be purpose to all cities and states in America. For example, I believe that schools and colleges should show a video and saggy pants to students and the consequences that comes with it. Students choose the subjects they would like to study without having to think how theyd appear in front of the opposite sex. For example, girls can study math, science and technology subjects without the fear of appearing as tomboys; boys can study arts, poetry, music and advanced subjects without being afraid to be called a nerd or a freak. Scientists also found out by tests that girls mature earlier han boys and this might be the reason for the different thinking ways of the two sexes. Finally, an important factor found in single sex schools more than the co- educational ones is the fairness factor. In 1993, two professors in the American University, Myra and David Sadker, published a research that noted student-teacher interactions. They reached a conclusion which stated that in co-educational schools, female teachers always prefer male students and male teachers prefer female students. For example, when boys keep calling out answers and yell, the teacher oesnt remind them that they have to raise their hands first. She becomes more effective due to the time spent trying to engage with the students through physical activities. Its also easier to explain topics that might embarrass girls when taught in front of boys, for example, the menstruation cycle. Opponents think that the social skills of students are affected by this type of education in a negative way. They assume that they wont know how to handle and socialize with the opposite sex. However, this idea can be easily refuted by scientific researches that have interviewed people who were n single sex schools and now are working and socializing normally. When interviewed, they totally disagreed with this assumption. They also said that single sex education tends to break social stereotypes that can be found in most of the co- educational schools. One of the most important social advantages of single sex schools is that the amount of bullying is very low. This is very important because some children who go through bullying eventually end up having socializing problems or becoming criminals. In single sex schools, students arent Judged by what they study, how they dress or how they look. They are accepted the way they are. It is a new experience that everyone should try. A new feeling not everyone gets the chance to feel! The school eventually becomes like a second home to the students and the people in the school are considered as a second family. People against this type of schooling should reconsider the idea and try it because there is a big possibility they will change what they think of it!
